Roblox Spatial Voice lets you talk to nearby players using your microphone — but it's off by default and requires age verification to turn on. Here's exactly how to set it up.

What is Roblox Voice Chat?

Roblox Spatial Voice is a proximity-based voice chat system. It works like real life — the closer another player is to you in-game, the louder their voice. Players far away sound quieter or can't be heard at all.

Not every game uses it. Voice chat only works in games where the developer has specifically enabled it.

Requirements to Use Voice Chat

Before you can enable voice chat, you need:

  • Age 13 or older on your Roblox account
  • ID verification — Roblox requires you to verify your age using a government-issued ID or by taking a selfie
  • A microphone connected to your device
  • The Roblox desktop app — voice chat does not work in the browser version

If your account shows you as under 13, you cannot enable voice chat regardless of your real age.

How to Enable Voice Chat on PC

  1. Log into your Roblox account at roblox.com
  2. Click the gear icon (top right) → Settings
  3. Click Privacy in the left sidebar
  4. Scroll down to Voice Chat
  5. Click Enable voice chat
  6. You'll be taken to the age verification page
  7. Choose your verification method:
    • Upload a photo ID (driver's license, passport)
    • Take a selfie — Roblox uses AI to estimate your age
  8. Complete the verification
  9. Once verified, toggle Voice Chat to ON

After enabling, voice chat will be active in any game that supports it.

How to Use Voice Chat In-Game

Once enabled, voice chat activates automatically when you join a compatible game.

Controls:

  • Your microphone is on by default when you join
  • Press M to mute/unmute yourself
  • A small microphone icon appears above your character when you're speaking
  • Other players' voice volume adjusts automatically based on their distance from you

To adjust volume or mute other players:

  1. Click the Roblox menu (Escape key or hamburger icon)
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find the Voice section to adjust your input/output volume

How to Turn Off Voice Chat

If you want to disable it completely:

  1. Settings → Privacy
  2. Scroll to Voice Chat
  3. Toggle it OFF

To just mute yourself temporarily while in a game, press M.

For Parents: How to Disable Voice Chat for Your Child

  1. Log into your child's account
  2. Settings → Privacy
  3. Under Voice Chat, ensure it is toggled OFF
  4. Set a Parent PIN (Settings → Security → Account PIN) so your child cannot re-enable it

Voice chat requires ID verification, so children with accurate under-13 birth dates cannot enable it at all.

Why Can't I See the Voice Chat Option?

  • Your account may be set to under 13 — voice chat is not available for under-13 accounts
  • You may be using the browser version — voice chat requires the desktop app
  • Your account may not have completed age verification yet

FAQs

Is Roblox voice chat safe?

Voice chat has a report system — you can report players for voice chat abuse. Roblox also has voice moderation. For younger teens, monitoring which games they play with voice enabled is worthwhile.

Does voice chat work on mobile?

Roblox is rolling out voice chat support on mobile but it is limited. Most voice chat functionality is on the desktop app.

Do I have to use my real name for age verification?

The ID verification is handled by a third-party service (Veriff). Roblox states they do not store your ID — only the age confirmation result.
