Turning off Roblox chat is one of the most important safety steps for younger players. Here's exactly how to do it — takes under 2 minutes.

Option 1: Turn Off All Chat Completely

This disables all messaging — no one can chat with your child in the app or in games.

  1. Log into your child's Roblox account at roblox.com
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click Privacy in the left sidebar
  5. Under Contact Settings, change all three options to No one:
    • Who can message me in the app → No one
    • Who can chat with me in the app → No one
    • Who can chat with me in games → No one
  6. Scroll down and click Save
Done.Chat is now completely disabled. Your child can still play all games — they just won't be able to send or receive messages.

Option 2: Restrict Chat to Friends Only

If you want your child to be able to chat with people they already know but not strangers:

  1. Follow steps 1–4 above
  2. Change all three options to Friends
  3. Click Save

This means only people already on your child's friend list can message them.

Option 3: Enable Account Restrictions (Most Restrictive)

Account Restrictions goes further than just chat — it also limits which games your child can access.

  1. Settings → Privacy
  2. Find Account Restrictions
  3. Toggle it ON

With Account Restrictions on:

  • Chat is automatically restricted to Friends only
  • Your child is limited to a curated list of age-appropriate games
  • Strangers cannot contact them
Important:Set a Parent PIN before enabling Account Restrictions so your child can't turn it back off themselves.

How to Set a Parent PIN (Lock the Settings)

Without a PIN, your child can just go back and turn chat on again.

  1. Settings → Security
  2. Under Account PIN, click Add PIN
  3. Enter and confirm a 4-digit number — write it down somewhere safe
  4. From now on, a PIN is required to change any account settings

Does This Work on Mobile Too?

Yes. Chat settings sync across all devices — if you turn off chat on the website, it's also off on the Roblox app on iPhone, iPad, and Android.

You can also change the settings directly in the mobile app:

  1. Open Roblox app
  2. Tap the three dots (bottom right)
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Privacy
  5. Adjust the same settings

What About In-Game Chat?

The “Who can chat with me in games” setting covers in-game chat. Setting this to No onemeans your child's chat box in games will be disabled — they can still play but can't type messages to other players.

Some games have their own proximity voice chat (using a microphone). This is separate from text chat and is controlled in Settings → Privacy → Who can voice chat with me.

How to Know If Your Settings Worked

After saving:

  1. Go to your child's profile page
  2. If chat is successfully turned off, the message button on their profile will be inactive
  3. In any game, the chat box will not appear or will show as locked

FAQs

Can my child turn chat back on themselves?

Not if you've set a Parent PIN. The PIN is required to change any privacy settings.

Will turning off chat affect which games they can play?

No — turning off chat only affects messaging. Your child can still access all the same games.

I set it to “Friends only” but my child still got a message from a stranger.

Check their friend list. If someone they don't know is on their friend list, they can message them. Review the friend list and remove anyone unknown. Then set friend requests to “No one” or “Friends of Friends.”

Does Roblox have voice chat?

Yes, some games use Roblox Spatial Voice (proximity voice chat). It requires age verification and is opt-in. You can disable it in Settings → Privacy → Who can voice chat with me → No one.
