How to Reduce Lag in Roblox: 10 Fixes That Work

8 min readUpdated April 2026

Lag in Roblox falls into two categories — graphics lag (low FPS, stuttering) and network lag (rubber-banding, delayed actions, disconnections). The fixes are different for each.

First: Identify Which Type of Lag You Have

Graphics lag symptoms:

  • Game looks choppy or stuttery
  • FPS counter shows low numbers (under 30)
  • Lag is consistent regardless of your internet speed

Network lag symptoms:

  • Your character snaps back to previous positions ("rubber-banding")
  • Actions take a second to register
  • Other players appear to teleport
  • Ping is high (see below how to check)

How to check your ping in Roblox: Press Shift + F3 while in a game. This shows your ping (milliseconds) and FPS. Ping over 150ms = network lag. FPS under 30 = graphics lag.

Fix 1: Lower Graphics Quality (Biggest Impact)

This is the single most effective fix for graphics lag.

  1. While in a game, press EscapeSettings
  2. Find Graphics Quality
  3. Set it to 1 or 2 on older hardware, 3–5 on mid-range devices
  4. Click Save

Each step down in graphics quality significantly improves FPS. Most players can't tell the difference between quality 5 and 7, but FPS improves dramatically.

Fix 2: Enable Manual Graphics Mode

Let you control the renderer directly:

  1. Open Roblox settings before joining a game
  2. Go to SettingsRendering
  3. Change Graphics Mode from Automatic to Manual
  4. Set to a lower level

Fix 3: Close Background Applications

Every app running in the background uses RAM and CPU that Roblox needs.

  • Close your browser tabs (especially YouTube, Twitch, or anything streaming)
  • Close Discord (or at least disable hardware acceleration in Discord settings)
  • Close any other games or applications

Fix 4: Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated drivers cause poor performance in all games, including Roblox. See the crashing guide for update instructions per GPU brand.

Fix 5: Switch to the Desktop App Instead of Browser

The Roblox website runs inside a browser, which adds overhead. The desktop app performs better.

Download from roblox.com if you don't already have it.

Fix 6: Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet

Wi-Fi introduces latency and packet loss that causes rubber-banding. An ethernet cable directly to your router is the most impactful fix for network lag.

If a cable isn't practical, move closer to your router or switch to a 5GHz Wi-Fi network (less crowded than 2.4GHz).

Fix 7: Run a Speed Test

Check if your internet connection is actually the problem.

  1. Go to fast.com or speedtest.net
  2. Run a test
  3. For Roblox you need at minimum: 3 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload, under 150ms ping

If your speeds are fine but lag persists, the issue is more likely server-side or local network congestion.

Fix 8: Restart Your Router

Routers accumulate stale connections over time. A restart clears this.

  1. Unplug your router from power
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Plug it back in
  4. Wait for it to fully reconnect before testing Roblox

Fix 9: Join a Different Server

Every Roblox game has multiple servers. The one you joined might be the problem.

  1. In the game, press EscapeLeave
  2. On the game's page, scroll down to Servers
  3. Look for a server with lower ping (shown next to each server)
  4. Click Join on a lower-ping server

Joining a server geographically closer to you will always have lower ping.

Fix 10: Check if the Issue Is Server-Side

Sometimes Roblox's own servers are having problems that cause lag across many games.

Check our Is Roblox Down? page — if Roblox is showing degraded performance, waiting is the only option.

Mobile-Specific Lag Fixes

Close other apps: On mobile, apps running in the background compete for RAM. Fully close everything before playing.

Free up storage: iPhones and Androids slow down when storage is nearly full. Keep at least 2GB free.

Lower graphics in-app: Roblox mobile: Settings (gear icon) → Graphics Quality → drag to minimum.

Disable background app refresh: On iPhone: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → set Roblox to Off.

FAQs

Q: My ping is high but my internet speed is fast.

Internet speed and ping are different things. High bandwidth doesn't mean low ping. The issue is likely distance to the server or routing. Join a different server to get better ping.

Q: Lag only happens in one specific game.

That game's servers may be overloaded or it may have performance issues in its code. Try other games — if they run fine, the issue is specific to that game. Check if the game has a developer Discord or community where issues are reported.

Q: Everything was fine and lag started suddenly.

Check if Roblox is down, restart your router, and check that no Windows Update or background download is consuming your bandwidth.
