Guide to Robux: What Parents Need to Know

8 min readUpdated April 2026

Robux is Roblox's virtual currency — and for many families, unexpected Robux charges are the first real problem they encounter with the platform. Here's everything you need to understand to stay in control.

What is Robux?

Robux (often written as R$) is the currency used inside Roblox. Players use it to:

  • Buy accessories, clothing, and items for their avatar
  • Purchase game passes that unlock features in specific games
  • Buy Developer Products (consumable items within games)
  • Access premium areas of certain games

Robux cannot be earned through normal gameplay — it must be purchased with real money or received through Roblox Premium.

How Much Does Robux Cost?

  • 400 Robux — $4.99 (~80 R$ per $1)
  • 800 Robux — $9.99 (~80 R$ per $1)
  • 1,700 Robux — $19.99 (~85 R$ per $1)
  • 4,500 Robux — $49.99 (~90 R$ per $1)
  • 10,000 Robux — $99.99 (~100 R$ per $1)

The rule of thumb:100 Robux ≈ $1.25 USD. When your child asks for "1,000 Robux," that's about $12.50.

How Kids Spend Robux

Understanding where Robux goes helps you make informed decisions about how much to allow.

Avatar Items

The most common spending category. The Avatar Shop has items ranging from free to thousands of Robux. Most popular items are 80–300 R$. Limited items can cost thousands.

Game Passes

One-time purchases within a specific game — often $1–5 worth of Robux. Examples: double XP, exclusive areas, special abilities. These are tied to the game and have no value elsewhere.

Developer Products

Repeatable purchases within games — things like in-game currency, extra lives, boosts. These can add up quickly because there's no limit on how many times they can be bought.

Premium Stipend

If subscribed to Roblox Premium, a monthly Robux allowance is deposited automatically. This is the most predictable form of spending.

The Hidden Risk: How Charges Happen

This is the most important section for parents. There are three ways children make unauthorised purchases:

Saved payment methods: If a card is saved to the account, purchases can be made with a single click confirmation. Children may not fully understand each click costs real money.

The "it's just Robux" mindset: Children often mentally separate Robux from real money. 400 Robux feels like an in-game number, not $5 from the family account.

Gifting and trading scams: Some children spend Robux trying to get items through trades or give Robux to friends, not realising this depletes their balance.

How to Prevent Unexpected Charges

Method 1 — Remove All Saved Payment Methods (Recommended)

Settings → Billing → remove any saved cards. This makes every purchase require manually entering payment details — a natural friction point.

Method 2 — Use Roblox Gift Cards Only

Available at Walmart, Target, Amazon, GameStop, and many other retailers. Buy a fixed amount, load it onto the account, and when it's gone it's gone. No card on file means no surprise charges.

Best approach for younger children.

Method 3 — Roblox Premium as a Budget

Subscribe to Premium at the appropriate tier ($4.99, $9.99, or $19.99/month). Your child gets a fixed Robux allowance each month and learns to budget within it.

Best approach for children who play regularly.

Method 4 — Transaction Notifications

Set up spending alerts through your credit card or bank app. Any Roblox charge will trigger an immediate notification to your phone.

How to Check What's Been Spent

  1. Log into the account at roblox.com
  2. Settings → BillingTransaction History

This shows every purchase made, what it was for, the date, and the Robux/cash amount. Review this periodically — monthly is a good cadence.

Can You Get a Refund?

Roblox's refund policy is limited. Generally:

  • Roblox does not refund Robux purchases for "buyer's remorse"
  • Refunds may be possible for unauthorised charges by a minor — contact Roblox Support and explain the situation
  • Credit card chargeback is a last resort but may result in the account being restricted

If you discover unexpected charges: Contact Roblox Support at roblox.com/support immediately. Explain that your child made unauthorised purchases. They process these case by case and often issue refunds for genuine cases involving young children.

Is Roblox Premium Worth It for Kids?

  • Child rarely spends Robux: Skip Premium — use gift cards as needed
  • Child spends Robux regularly: Premium saves money vs buying outright
  • Child wants to trade items: Premium required for trading
  • You want predictable spending: Premium gives a fixed monthly budget

FAQs

Q: My child says "Robux is free" — is that true?

No. There are websites claiming to give free Robux, but they are all scams. Robux can only be obtained by purchasing it, earning it through game development, or receiving it through Roblox Premium.

Q: Can Robux be converted back to real money?

Only by game developers through the DevEx (Developer Exchange) program, and only if they meet strict eligibility requirements. For regular players, Robux has no cash value.

Q: My child spent all their Robux on something they regret. Can we get it back?

Contact Roblox Support. For accidental purchases, especially involving children, they sometimes reverse the transaction. It's worth asking.

Q: How much Robux is reasonable to give a child per month?

400–800 Robux ($5–$10) is a reasonable monthly allowance for children who play actively. This covers a few avatar items or a game pass without encouraging excessive spending.
